Why I Don’t Host on Windows

First off, this is not a rag on Microsoft or Windows. It is, however, a criticism of using proprietary, closed source software. If you can read this, since so many PC’s and devices are still offline right now, you may be aware of the mass, world-wide Windows outages caused by a bad CrowdStrike update. CrowdStrike is a 3rd party malware protection software used by a massive number of enterprise companies, all of whom are now suffering critical outages and work stoppages. Ya know who doesn’t use it? Me! Because I don’t like closed-source solutions from providers that are afraid of exposing what’s under the hood, and I don’t like malware protection software that’s always trying to prove, “Hey, I’m doing something! See how valuable I am!!” That is, in my opinion, what false positives come from. What’s more is that, due to Microsoft’s dominance with Windows, the entire world is completely dependent on a single piece of proprietary software NOT BREAKING due to a botched update. Well, that just bit everyone in the place most often seen only by the snakes slithering up into our toilet bowls. Of course, no one at all is completely immune to outages. After all, stating “99% uptime” is still valid even if your site is offline up to about 3 and 1/2 days per year. If your website is mission critical, that’s a lot! And as I work to build my own infrastructure and improve stability, I basically do the absolute best I can, and things get better all the time. I assume that’s what EVERY provider is doing, even Microsoft and CrowdStrike. But I’m still not going to use them.

Getting Everything Ready

Now that I’m finally official, legalified LLC and such, I’m trying to get the site all pretty and informative. Not easy with 3 boys who are all too curious for their own good, constantly getting themselves into trouble. Or the dog’s water bowl. Or the trash can. Or the box of toys we JUST PUT AWAY! And what is it about dog food toddlers think is so irresistible?! His uncle ate dog food when he was a baby. Like uncle, like nephew, I guess. Anyway, if the site looks unfinished, that’s why. Because I always prioritize client sites, and leave my own to “whenever I get a chance.”
